Social Media: One Is (Always) Greater Than Zero

This month, we’re talking about social media on the blog. To start, we’ll look to Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the leading experts and authors in the field whose company, VaynerMedia, just won the Shorty Awards for Best Large Agency (he opened the agency in 2009). One of his core philosophies is the concept that one is greater than zero. This simple concept can help you approach your social media in a whole new way.

Instead of worrying about your total number of followers on any channel, instead think that for every piece of content you share through a social channel, one new set of eyes might see it. This one set of eyes could be the editor or writer of a major magazine that decides to feature your business in an upcoming issue. Or, this new set of eyes could become a brand loyalist and share their love for your brand to their hundreds of social media followers, who in turn could become new fans of your brand.

Of course, everyone wants to have their content go viral, but it’s more effective and uplifting to take a “one post at a time” approach. By treating every set of eyes like they matter, the numbers will grow organically. Vaynerchuk urges businesses to remember,

“It’s about having the humility. It’s about not saying no. Even when you’ve made it. You’re never too big. One is bigger than zero.”

Vaynerchuk is one of the hardest working people in social media. Sure, he has a team of people to help create, post and respond for his social media posts, but Gary does a ton of the work himself and has his hands in everything. For each channel, the content is customized and showcases Vaynerchuk’s no nonsense, take charge, and very intense personality, conveying his company culture digitally. Here’s a roundup in the day and the life of Gary Vaynerchuk on social media:

  • YouTube: Every week, he publishes a new #AskGaryVee episode on YouTube.
  • Twitter: Typically around 10 tweets. For example, on Thursday, April 2, Vaynerchuk sent out nine tweets with a mix of pushing original content, sharing about his wine business, and industry news.
  • Instagram: In March 2015, he posted 36 Instagram photos, averaging just over one new post per day.
  • Facebook: He posts typically at least once per day, sometimes up to three times per day.
  • Pinterest: He has posted 449 pins and uses it as a place to collect his content in organized boards by the #AskGaryVee show, produced vidoes, wine reviews, quotes, and more. Definitely less active on here but still utilizing the channel.

So what does all this mean for you? If insanely busy and successful Gary Vaynerchuk can take the time to make sure a post goes out on practically every major channel—plus experiment with new channels—every business can too that wants to grow their online presence steadily, consistently, and organically…one new follower at a time. And we’re here to help you every step of the way through creating and executing a new and improved social and digital marketing strategy for your business.
